The world is a dynamic and difficult place where it's easy to feel overwhelmed.  How can we build the inner resources to work with others' distress as well as our own, so that we can be of benefit without getting burned out?  We will focus on meditation techniques and teachings that can help us to build trust in ourselves and our ability to handle our experience. Trauma is defined by the emotional and psychological effect an event has on people, and less by the event itself. Explore the science of trauma and discuss how trauma effects physical & mental health with a licensed therapist. For more information and to register, click here

ISU WorkLife EAP Webinar: Civility in Today's Workplace | 1:00 - 3:00 pm 

Few would argue that our society has become less civil - and the workplace is no exception.  Today we can observe a continuum of behaviors and actions that include rude and discourteous behavior, electronic incivility and even "cybermobbing."  Promoting a culture of mutual respect and effectively managing the risks associated with uncivil behavior has become crucial to organizational success. 

Course Objectives: Explore the causes of incivility at work, review business costs associated with uncivil behavior, learn how behavior within an organization escalates within "the incivility spiral", discuss forms of electronic incivility and the harm it can do, learn skills and tools useful in improving communication and preventing conflict, and encourage participants to model respectful behavior in their organization. ISU Lectures Webinar: Suicide Prevention Training- Educator and Professionals Session | 3:30 - 4:30 pm 

Kevin Hines is a multiple award-winning filmmaker, bestselling author, award-winning global suicide prevention and mental health advocate. Two years after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (19 years of age), he attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Kevin's story is now the only evidence-based story of a suicide attempt survived. Kevin discusses his evidence informed recovery 10-step toolkit which plays a crucial role in his recovery. He shares his process for wellness, resilience and recovery. Objectives include: cite some key concepts of suicide prevention, identify the characteristics of people with higher risk to attempted suicide, identify how to build sustainable mental health practices, and define suicide prevention strategies as an identifiable source of recovery. Story County Mental Health Virtual Expo: | 5:00 - 7:30 pm 

This community event provides information and resources to understand and support mental health issues including trauma, stress and substance abuse. At 5:00pmaccess will be given to the virtual vendor fair. There will be a wide variety of agencies represented at the vendor fair and quick access to each agency website/social media will make it easy to learn more about what services they can offer. At 6:00 pm, participants can access the live Keynote Speaker Kevin Hines; this will be followed by live Q&A with the Keynote. The virtual event is coordinated by Ames Police Department, Central Iowa Community Services (CICS), Community and Family Resources, Community Support Advocates (CSA), Eyerly Ball, Iowa State University (ISU) Counseling, ISU Committee on Lectures, ISU Police Department, Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI), National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Central Iowa, Optimae Life Services, and Youth & Shelter Services (YSS). dsm Magazine Webinar: Lifting the Veil- Teens at Risk | 12:00 - 1:00 pm 

Over the last year, teens’ lives have been transformed by the pandemic, heightened conversations about racial equity, and the political landscape. Isolation, shifting between in-person and remote learning, missing milestones, and confronting social unrest have resulted in increased levels of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and substance abuse among teens. Join us as we start our Friday Walk & Talks this fall. We’ll meet on Fridays at 12:10 on the front steps of Beardshear for a one mile walk around our picturesque ISU campus. Come walk and talk with friends, colleagues, or just come and enjoy the beauty of campus. Join ISU WorkLife and WellBeing and de-stress from the week. Why do some people seem to persevere in adversity and others quit? Just what does the phrase Emotional Intelligence (EQ) mean? This training will explain the difference between EQ and IQ and the importance of EQ in the workplace. The popular use of the term refers to mixed traits that include: self-awareness, motivation and persistence, optimism and the ability to manage one's emotions. Course Objectives: Define and describe EQ, discover the importance of EQ, understand the components of EQ, learn applications of EQ in the workplace, and acquire skills and build your EQ muscles. ISU WorkLife and WellBeing is once again partnering with Ames Lab Occupational Medicine to provide flu vaccinations to eligible ISU employees. The vaccine is provided at no cost as a service.
